A cup of black coffee with beans

Short answer: Plain black coffee is low FODMAP at 1 cup (250 ml), per Monash University. Problems usually come from milk, added syrups, or caffeine sensitivity — not the coffee itself.

    Monash Portion Guide

Coffee type Low FODMAP serving Notes
Espresso (single shot) 1 shot Safe
    Black filter/pour-over 1 cup (250 ml) Safe
Instant coffee 2 tsp powder Safe
Decaf 1 cup Same rules apply
Latte (regular cow milk) HIGH FODMAP Lactose overload
Latte with lactose-free milk 1 regular cup Safe
Almond milk latte 1 cup Almond milk safe to 250 ml

Why Coffee Triggers IBS (Even When Low FODMAP)

    1. Caffeine stimulates gut motility — can cause urgency
    2. Milk lactose if you're lactose intolerant
    3. Syrups with high fructose corn syrup or honey (why honey is high FODMAP)
    4. Empty stomach amplifies acid irritation

IBS tip: Try decaf for one week during elimination. If symptoms improve, caffeine — not FODMAPs — is your trigger.

    Safe Coffee Orders

    • Black coffee or espresso
    • Cappuccino with lactose-free milk
    • Latte with almond, macadamia, or hemp milk (avoid oat milk >½ cup)
    • Cold brew (lower acidity)
