Jars of yellow and dijon mustard with seeds

Quick Answer: Is Mustard Low FODMAP?

Yes — plain yellow mustard and Dijon are low FODMAP at 1 tablespoon (23g) per Monash University testing. Larger servings and specialty mustards (honey mustard, some wholegrain) can trigger IBS symptoms.

Evidence-Based: Yellow mustard is rated green at 1 tbsp and amber at 2 tbsp+ due to accumulating fructans.

    Portion Chart by Mustard Type

    Mustard Safe Serve Notes
Yellow mustard 1 tbsp (23g) ✅ Green — condiment amount
Dijon mustard 1 tbsp ✅ Green
Wholegrain mustard 1 tsp ⚠️ Some brands add garlic/onion
Honey mustard Avoid ❌ Honey = high FODMAP
English/hot mustard 1 tsp ✅ Usually safe — check labels

What to Watch For on the Label

Many specialty mustards sneak in high FODMAP ingredients:

    • Garlic powder / onion powder — very common in gourmet blends
    • Honey — automatic disqualifier for elimination phase
    • High fructose corn syrup — in cheap yellow brands
    • Wheat flour — occasional thickener

Run any suspicious brand through our FODMAP Food Checker before buying.

    Safe Brands (US & UK)

    • French's Classic Yellow — just mustard seed, vinegar, salt, turmeric ✅
    • Maille Original Dijon — clean ingredients ✅
    • Colman's English Mustard — safe in small amounts ✅

How to Use Mustard on Low FODMAP

    1. Salad dressings — Whisk 1 tsp Dijon with olive oil, lemon, salt. Perfect over spinach.
    2. Marinades — Combine with maple syrup and tamari for a low FODMAP "honey mustard" swap.
    3. Sandwiches — Spread on gluten-free bread with turkey and lettuce.
    4. Sauces — Stir into cream sauces for chicken. See our Low FODMAP Baked Salmon for a mustard glaze idea.

Homemade Low FODMAP Honey Mustard Swap

Mix 2 tbsp Dijon + 1 tbsp maple syrup + 1 tsp lemon juice + pinch of salt. Tastes almost identical without the FODMAPs.

    FAQ

Is mustard OK during elimination phase? Yes — 1 tbsp yellow or Dijon is safe.

Why is honey mustard off-limits? Honey contains excess fructose, a Monash-confirmed high FODMAP.

Can I eat wholegrain mustard? In 1 tsp amounts, and only if the label is garlic/onion-free.
